Calm in the storm

Our lives are filled with stress, anxiety, demands that stretch our perceived limits, and relationships that can be difficult to manage. Through all the things that life throws at us, we can struggle with our emotions and ability to handle them productively.

We get triggered and often unleash our anger and frustration on others. For those of us who have mastered the art of not exploding in the moment but holding it within, we have a different kind of problem. We bottle it all up until we reach our limit, and we then unleash our anger, often on those who are closest to us. Leaving a wake of issues and hurt people along our way.

No matter how you choose to handle these stressful and difficult circumstances the outcome can be devastating to both yourself and those around you when not handled appropriately.

Awareness is the first step in discovering positive ways of handling these triggers.

Why am I being triggered by that situation, person or thing?

What value do I have that I feel others are taking advantage of?

What do I believe others are communicating to me about who I am or my value by their behaviour towards me?

Taking the time to be aware of the times we get triggered and recognize how we respond will be important in the process of developing better coping strategies.

Anger, when not dealt with, can cause much damage. It can destroy relationships, close doors of opportunity, and worst of all, cause damage to ourselves.

Anger does as much damage to the one it is stored in as to the one it is unleashed upon. Sit with that for a minute. And think back to how you have handled your anger. How has it impacted you personally, and think about how it has impacted those whom you unleashed your anger upon.

There is a way of handling your anger in a way that is positive and productive. No One Stands Alone Foundation is launching our new program called "Calm in the Storm" an anger management program designed to help you discover the underlying reasons you are triggered, as well as understand the science behind what is actually happening in your body. We will also be learning strategies of how to manage your anger in healthy ways.
